From Elphsoft, the developer that brought you the handy and quite useful Universal Torrent Checker (a freeware application that monitors and informs you about torrents updates), comes the very useful application DBF Commander Professional. Get this application if you work with databases and you want a powerful tool to be able to view and edit them.

The DBF Commander Professional installation file weighs in at 5.1MB, which is not very much; on a high-speed internet connection the download will complete in a blink. Going through the simple setup wizard won’t take much of your time either. It must be mentioned that the setup wizard asks you if you want to associate DBF Commander Professional with .dbf and .fpt files, asks if you want a desktop shortcut, and asks if you want to run and visit the DBF Commander Professional webpage once the installation completes.

There isn’t much to say about the interface, apart from the fact that it’s easy to figure out and that it is focused on helping you get things done rapidly. As a matter of fact, Elphsoft did say that during the development process, one of its aims was to create a user friendly interface. When you launch DBF Commander Professional, you will see the following: a traditional File menu at the top, buttons for various functions beneath it, and a large empty window. In the window you will see the database you open.

As mentioned above, Elphsoft focused on ease of use while developing DBF Commander Professional. This doesn't mean that it neglected the functionality side – quite the opposite. Elphsoft built this database tool so that it blends together ease of use with powerful functions. Everything you would expect to get from a database editor, well, DBF Commander Professional has it.

With DBF Commander Professional installed on your Windows-powered machine you can open, edit and print DBF and FPT files, you can find and replace content, you can convert DBF file encoding, you can export routines, you can execute SQL queries, you can import and export data, you can encrypt and decrypt DBF files, and more. There’s even a very interesting wizard you can use to build charts – pie, graph, bar, and other types of charts.

You have a limited amount of time at your disposal to uncover all the functionality DBF Commander Professional has to offer. You can assess the application’s functionality for free for a trial period of 20 days. During this time you will repeatedly be reminded that you’re using the trial version.

As mentioned above, Elphsoft has another software application to offer: Universal Torrent Checker. Say you get episodes for a TV show from a torrent tracker. Instead of checking the torrent site yourself, let Universal Torrent Checker do it for you. The application will monitor the torrent and inform you when updates are available. Unlike DBF Commander Professional, Universal Torrent Checker is freeware.

I must say that DBF Commander Professional, by combining ease of use with powerful functionality, is a must have tool for anyone who works with databases.

Pros

DBF Commander Professional features a user friendly interface. Use the application to view and edit DBF and FPT files. It provides support for SQL queries; command line is supported as well. Use it to convert DBF files. There’s a handy wizard for creating charts. You can encrypt and decrypt DBF files.

Cons

Free to use for 20 day; reminder that you’re using the trial version.
